The village is known for its colourful wooden houses and the old fishing boats in its harbour. The city is home to a wooden shoe factory and cheese farm to enlighten its customer.
One of the most characteristic things about Volendam is its traditional costumes, sometimes still worn by its inhabitants. Nearby Marken Island has a similar appeal.
